Judge Schedules August Hearing for Patrick Harran

Eleven months to the day after the University of California accepted “responsibility for the conditions” that led to the death of lab assistant Sheri Sangji, a Los Angeles judge set 26 August as the date for the next hearing in the long-running criminal case against Patrick Harran. Harran is head of the lab at the University of California, Los Angeles, where 23-year-old Sangji was fatally burned while working, in December 2008. The university’s acceptance of responsibility was part of a wide-ranging settlement that included criminal charges against the 10-campus institution being dropped. Harran, also charged with felonies in Sangji’s death, was not part of the settlement. A judge entered a not guilty plea on his behalf in September 2012.

At the forthcoming hearing, a motion by Harran’s defense team to dismiss the charges will once again be considered, reports .
