ANN ARBOR, MICHIGAN—As the Future of Bioscience Graduate and Postdoctoral Training meeting entered its final hours yesterday, Science Careers learned that the Future of Research (FOR) symposium, the postdoc-organized event in Boston that made news last fall, is inspiring similar meetings in cities from coast to coast. The meetings will take place in the coming weeks and months.
After their successful initial conference, the Boston organizers hoped their example would help “connect postdocs with each other and with other stakeholders in science more effectively,” says Gary McDowell, FOR’s joint lead organizer and a postdoc at Tufts University in Medford, Massachusetts, in an interview with Science Careers. “Lots of groups contacted us from across the country interested in having their own regional discussions [that would also be] connected with each other nationwide.” As of now, he tells us, postdocs are organizing meetings in New York on 21 May, in the San Francisco Bay area in July, in Chicago on 29 October, and again in Boston on an October date yet to be determined. On its website, FOR provides a how-to guide for organizing a meeting in your own area.
